Product description

Coleus (Rainbow Mix) - The Rainbow variety of Coleus is one of most popular of coleus and the mixture includes a complete color range, from green-yellow, bronze and red colors. A very colorful foliage plant for shade to part shade locations. Plants are grown for the exotic foliage with its bold colors, including multi-hued leaves. Plants are ideal for borders or as mixed container plants. Coleus is also an excellent houseplant which will add color to those dreary winter days. Coleus are easy to grow. Gardeners grow them both outdoors, and as indoor houseplants. Originating in Africa and Indonesia, Coleus tolerates shade well, making them a great indoor houseplant. They do well in shade gardens, pots and containers, and in hanging baskets.

Seafood platter: Break-out coleus series offers unusual foliage - Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier

Coleus is suddenly the season's new "darling."

It's always been one of my go-to foliage fillers, stuffed into pots and occasionally garden beds to provide contrast with hostas and other shade-preferring plants. In recent years, coleus varieties are becoming more sun-tolerant and the colors a little more wild.

The "Under the Sea" coleus series I spied at the recent Chicago Flower and Garden Show, though, is a real showstopper.

The frilly foliage is unusually striking with vivid colors and shapes. With names like "Gold Anemone," "Hermit Crab" and "Langostino, " cultivars in the series sound like something from "Little Mermaid" or Seaworld, and the plants themselves would look at perfectly at home in a tidal pool or on a coral reef.

The series is offered from Hort Couture Plants, a relatively new North American plant brand that has dedicated itself to marketing sophisticated and upscale plants with appealing, fashion-conscious --- and productive --- qualities.

The company has introduced 28 new plants for 2012, including succulents, the Calibrachoa "Kimono" series, bred for hanging baskets, and Petunia "Panache" series with names like "Hell's Bells" and "Pink Provocateur."

Pots and large shell-shaped planters filled with "Under the Sea" coleus were scattered around the company's booth at the garden show earlier this month. Passersby, including me, were enchanted by the waves of color and unusual foliage. Honestly, I've never seen anything like it.

Company reps at the booth said the annual can be planted in partial sun and the foliage won't scorch or burn, and the plant doesn't flower heavily, as some coleus varieties do.

Most varieties in the series reach about 15 to 18 inches tall and 12 to 16 inches wide. Plants are upright and mounding and look great in containers.

Hort Couture Plants CEO Jim Monroe has told the press that he is excited about the coleus because "each leaflet has a...
